Busan Wonsan Myeonok
부산 원산면옥
The best pyeongyang naengmyeon (North Korean-style cold buckwheat noodle) place in Busan. The only one that can truly rival milmyeon's throne.
Notes
- This is the best pyeongyang naengmyeon in Busan. The broth is genuinely rich yet clean. The noodles are delicious too, with just the right balance.
- It's also the restaurant that journalist Joo Sung-ha, a graduate of Kim Il-sung University, picked as the best pyeongyang naengmyeon restaurant in South Korea.
- For the bibim naengmyeon (mixed, no-broth version), instead of the usual kodari (semi-dried pollock) topping, they add a distinctive raw skate (gaori-hoe) salad in keeping with Busan tradition. Personally, it wasn't to my taste.
- The noodles are made using truly traditional methods, so they can go soft quickly. I'd recommend not letting them sit too long.
- They also give you a separate hot broth you can pour in yourself, and it's quite hot. Blow on it and be careful as you drink.
- Until I tried Uraeok, I never understood why people say pyeongyang naengmyeon tastes bad, like 'dishwater used to wash a rag.'. Wonsan Myeonok is overwhelmingly better. This is the place to get naengmyeon.
